Disclosure: I bought this winch with my own money at full price on Amazon in 2022. Nobody sent it to me and nobody is paying for this review. If that ever changes for anything on this site, it will say so right here at the top.
Quick verdict: 3.5 out of 5. The winch itself has never failed me in four years and well over 100 pulls, on two different trucks, with zero maintenance. The factory power cables are another story. One corroded through and snapped off the day I needed the winch, and that failure is the difference between a 3.5 and a much higher score. Buy this winch if you want, but budget for proper power cables from day one and check them before trips.
My setup
- X-BULL 10,000 lb electric winch, 12V, synthetic rope (the red rope version), 5.6 HP motor, IP67 rated
- Wireless and wired remote (2-in-1), hawse fairlead
- First mounted in an HK Offroad hidden winch mount on my first GX, then transferred to the Victory 4×4 Strike front bumper on my current 2008 GX470
- Bought on Amazon in 2022 for under $300

Why this review is different
Most budget winch reviews are written after a weekend. This one has been on two of my trucks since 2022 and has been used more than 100 times. It has pulled me out of muddy bogs, off sandy hills where I was framed out, and up mud covered Kentucky mountains. It has recovered other rigs too, the biggest being a half-ton pickup stuck in mud. I am hard on my gear and I will be honest about this part: I have never performed any maintenance or service on this winch. Not once. It still pulls strong.
Install and wiring
The install itself was straightforward both times, in the hidden mount and in the Victory bumper, and the control box fit without any relocation in either one. Wiring it up was simple too. The problem is not how the wiring goes together, it is what the factory power cables are made of. More on that below, because it is the one real failure this winch has had.
On the trail: power, speed, and heat
It is rated at 10,000 lb and I have never asked it to pull something it could not pull, including that half-ton pickup in the mud. Line speed is fair. It is not fast, but it is not noticeably slow either, and in a recovery I care a lot more about steady than fast. My longest single pull was about two minutes of continuous winching with no rest, and it did not get hot and has never shut off on me. For a winch at this price, that still surprises me a little.

The pull I will never forget
Leatherwood, Kentucky, trails 433 and 432, pouring rain. I was on KO2s at the time and they had zero traction in that mud. Getting myself up that climb took a lot of winching. Then I had to help get the 10 people behind me up too. That day alone would have justified what I paid for this winch, and it never missed a beat.

The remote
I run the wireless remote and it has worked every single time I needed it. I did manage to lose the original remote at some point, which is on me, not the winch. I bought a replacement wireless kit off eBay, wired it in, and it has been zero issues since.
The one real failure: the factory cables
Here is the part of this review that matters most if you are thinking about buying one. The factory wiring to the motor is low quality. One of the power cables corroded away over time and snapped off when I went to use the winch. The motor was fine. The winch was fine. A cheap cable nearly left me stuck. In my own words when it happened: if I had been solo, I would have been in big trouble.

I replaced the bad cables with high quality copper core cables, and I now check the winch cables before every trip, which takes two minutes. Since the cable swap, no issues at all. My honest advice: if you buy this winch, order quality power cables with it and swap them early, and inspect whatever cables you run before trips. Do that and the weak link in this setup is gone.
Who should buy it
Buy it if: you want real recovery capability on a budget, you actually get out and use your rig, and you are willing to spend a little extra on proper power cables and two minutes of pre-trip checks.
Skip it if: you want install-it-and-forget-it-forever peace of mind with zero inspection, or your peace of mind requires a big name on the housing. A premium winch costs three times more for a reason, and cables are part of that reason.
FAQ
Is a budget X-BULL winch reliable long term? In my experience, the winch itself is. Four years, two trucks, 100 plus pulls, zero maintenance, and the motor has never failed. The factory power cables are the weak point, not the winch.
Is 10,000 lb enough for a GX470? Yes. It has pulled my loaded GX and a half-ton pickup in mud without struggling.
Has it ever overheated or shut off? No. My longest continuous pull was about two minutes and it handled it without getting hot.
Would you trust it on a solo trip? With the cable issue fixed and checked, yes, and I do. With the original factory cables untouched, that is exactly the failure that could strand a solo driver, which is why I tell people to swap and inspect them.
Final verdict
3.5 out of 5. A rugged, durable, no-maintenance winch that has earned its keep many times over for under $300, held back by factory power cables that are not worthy of the winch they are attached to. Replace the cables, check them before trips, and it is hard to argue with. Would I buy it again? Yes, and I would order the good cables in the same cart.
